Advantages and Disadvantages of Solar Power

Solar energy harnesses renewable sources such as the sun and wind. Thus, solar energy has a significantly lighter impact on the environment compared to fossil fuels. Solar systems generate electricity without producing emissions or waste into the atmosphere. There are many more advantages of solar power which easily outweigh the disadvantages of solar power.

    Advantages of Solar Power

    • Solar energy is infinite. The sun shines every day, and will do so as long as we live which is one of the great advantages of solar power.

    • Solar energy is free. Once we have installed a photovoltaic system, the small upfront costs will pay off over the following years.

    • One of the most comfortable advantages of solar power is that once installed, a photovoltaic system lasts long and needs little attendance.

    • A photovoltaic system does not need direct sunlight – it will still produce power when it is cloudy.
    • Solar energy is becoming cheaper: panel prices are dropping and installations are supported by government and state incentives.
    • One of the most important advantages of solar power is that it is not location specific. This makes it possible to harness electricity in remote locations which may not be linked to a national grid.

    • Solar panels can be installed on top of almost any rooftop, making it easy to find the necessary space for solar panel placement. The panels are flat and will not interfere with the aesthetic of the building.

    • Solar energy means energy supply independence. Solar installations allow owners to become independent from fossil fuel energy sources; one of the most important advantages of solar power.

    Disadvantages of Solar Power

    • High initial costs of implementing solar energy infrastructure are probably the biggest disadvantage. However this can be offset by the long-term returns of the initial costs. It is a one-time investment which yields sustainable energy supply and makes economical sense post installation.

    • Solar systems are only able to generate electricity during daylight hours. But solar technology is advancing and experts are working on electric storage systems so this disadvantage will slowly fade as technology increases in this field.

    • Weather affects the efficiency of solar cells; cloudy, rainy weather or heavy air pollution can interfere in the amount of sunlight that reaches the solar panel. The correlation of weather to solar power collection may prove as one of the biggest disadvantages of solar power, particularly when not connected to the grid.
